The Sufferer & The Witness is a record that captures what it's like to be human, from so many different angles, all done so in a very real, yet compassionate way. The Sufferer & The Witness is the fourth studio album by the American Punk Rock Band Rise Against. The album closes out with 'Survive', a brutally honest testament to human suffering and, more importantly, perseverance. This is juxtaposed well between the powerful poise of 'Behind Closed Doors' (which features some of the most creative guitar playing on the record) and the bittersweet but progressively uplifting 'The Good Left Undone'. Similarly, 'Roadside' is a strings-laden track that expresses vulnerability and loneliness in a somber, heartbreaking style. There's a reason that track is so enduring. 'Prayer of the Refugee' is a spectacularly articulated and powerfully empathetic critique on US immigration policies that swings back and forth between two very different dynamics (and tempos). 'The Approaching Curve', for example, is a fearless, incredible deviation from the breakneck pace of the majority of the album's tracks (sandwiched in between two of the hardest songs on here) featuring a bold creative choice in the employment of spoken word vocals and oscillating time signatures - even if it's only the two most common ones, it's still pretty rad. Though songs such as 'Injection', 'Ready to Fall' and 'Chamber The Cartridge' are essentially just updates on the basic melodic hardcore formula, the band on this record proves they have a secret strength for experimentation. In essence, Rise Against doesn't necessarily break any new ground on this record, but frankly it hardly matters considering how well they pull off this sound compared to their contemporaries. All of the hallmarks of great punk rock are here and in good health: topical yet timeless political commentary masked by eloquent poetry, brisk energetic rhythmic sensibilities for moshing capabilities, simple but incredibly effective song structures, etc. The sheer determination and dedication found here is quite possibly the most confident the band has ever sounded in their now 20 year long career.

While maintaining the bottle-rocket explosiveness of their first three records, this is where the band really started to come into themselves (and unfortunately the last truly remarkable thing they would ever do). I know that Rise Against at this point has become one of those bands everyone loves to hate, and while I can understand that if you just look at the later records, this album is truly one of the greatest punk rock records ever written.
